This work is an appreciation of connection..."
"Orokohanga"
kōkōwai on rolled canvas

This painting marks a new beginning. For myself and everything that surrounds me. Layers of intentions have been embedded to mark my journey of reconnection. Within these layers, korero of whakapapa beigns to form. The existence of my tīpuna is felt, and there is a deep respect for the mauri alive in the whenua.
I look.
I touch.
I taste.
I listen.
I smell.
I am connected to what surrounds me, physically and spiritually. Creation is not the artwork you are standing upon. You walk on creation every day. This work is an appreciation of connection. A moment to look, to listen, to taste and to feel.

It's the beginning of my own creation.

Artist statement:

"We come from the mountains. It nourishes us. Our awa. We drink it's water. We cleanse our bodies and our souls with it. We gather kai on Takata Whenua, we harvest plants, we give back to the land and to our people. We respect Papatūanuku. We carefully handle her rich ochre kōkōwai breathing life into every little bit of dust it's been ground down into. We bring our landscapes with us everywhere we go. We paint our ancestors' stories. With every stroke of whenua that touches the page, their wairua becomes present. Our tīpuna follow every footstep we embed into the Earth. Watching, listening, guiding us intentionally. Listen to them. We belong to everything that surrounds us. Even the things we can't see...

We feel them instead."

Tuturu is about belonging, connecting, and sharing of whakapapa.
There is a significant connection to time, place and people in these works.
They started from the whenua of Moewai's ancestral landscapes. She formed relationships and handled precious Earth pigments from each place with guidance and respect. Tuturu rests peacefully in stained wooden frames matching the colours of these pigments, sharing korero with each other about connection and whakapapa. It's a reminder to take a deep breath, breath in the wairua of your tīpuna and acknowledge your surroundings. Connection can start from anywhere.

"You are not alone Toroa" - Moewai Marsh

Picture

Kei Waho i te Keti
Dunedin Community Gallery
July 3rd- 17th 2022.

This painting was inspired by a Hone Tuwhare poem titled "Toroa."
The black and white interior is looking out over Taiaroa Heads (Pukekura,)
representing the lonesome albatross on his journey home.
The colour coming into this painting shows hope for the future and
for the present. Throughout this travellers journey, he faces many challenges. Being shot, cripple, trying to hold together his skin and flesh,
this Toroa soars vast oceans and lands to return home from his troublesome journey.

This painting is a reminder that no matter what struggles you encounter,
always remain grounded to where you roots connect to.

Home.

You are never alone. Especially on this journey you are on right now.
